A resource I relied on for the making of this comic is Joanna Carver Colcord's Sea Language Comes Ashore, a collection of idioms and expressions used by sailors in years past. It was through this book I learned the sailor's term sky pilot, which refers to a holy or mystical person. It's a fun read even if you're not writing dialogue for a sailing cat--you learn neat expressions that could be introduced into any conversation, like blood in the scuppers, greasy luck, and smoke and oakum!
I used this book as a reference in the first appearance of Cap'n Lao and Ship's Cook Maggie, Cap'n Cat: Former Shark Hunter, way back in 2013 or 14. It was a lot of fun going through it again to translate Lao's dialogue in this story.
Special thanks to my color assistant/flatter, Phoenix Cram.
