Today I share some big news from a meeting I had this afternoon, and offer some thoughts on avoiding brand cannibalism, picking battles, and how partnerships might work between an independent content creator and local businesses.

Thunder Punch Special 02 – Coding Punch

It’s another double-sized Thunder Punch Special! This time I’m joined by Rob Stenzinger of Art Geek Zoo, Babies Love Comics, and Guitar Fretter!

We discuss an often neglected subject in the sometimes overwhelming concerns facing an independent cartoonist–learning coding languages for websites, applications, and even games. Rob and I talk about why it’s important for a cartoonist to familiarize one’s self with the “under the hood” aspects of digital distribution methods, how it’s easier to learn than you might think, and some methods artists already use that can be applied to learning coding languages.

Thunder Punch Special 01 – Netiquette Punch

It’s a new show for the Art & Story Supreme Service–the Thunder Punch Special, where I will occasionally sit down with a guest for a longer discussion on topics I like to bring to TPD!

This time I’m joined by Kasey Van Hise for a talk on Netiquette and the pitfalls facing a cartoonist trying to find their niche through social media and web presence. We close with a few of our personal pet peeves or netiquette faux pas, with the caveat we threw out at the top–you attract the followers and constituency that you asked for.

Thunder Punch Daily 29 – WHY?

Today I share some thoughts on a recent TED talks presentation by Simon Sinek. In his talk he explains how inspired business leaders think in the order of Why, How, and What, while most of us think in the reverse order (and seldom get to the Why at the center). I dive in to explain how this philosophy applies to all aspects of our cartooning careers.

Thunder Punch Daily 27 – Asking the Right Questions

Today I share a few thoughts on how learning becomes a pleasurable process if we learn some basic research skills. Failing that, there are some wonderful free resources both online and offline for you to get the information you need.

Thunder Punch Daily 25 – That Darned App

Today I share a brief review of the Marvel iPhone App and how the reading experience is a violation of several fundamental principles of comics storytelling. For more ranting about Marvel on the iPhone/iPad, check out last week’s extra A&S Extreme!!
